Landau died of cancer on Friday, July 5

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jon Landau, an Oscar-winning producer who worked closely with director James Cameron on three of the biggest-grossing films of all time, has died.

Landau died of cancer on Friday, July 5, according to a statement from Cameron.

Landau, 63, had a long and successful career in Hollywood, but he will be best known for his work with Cameron on “Titanic,” “Avatar,” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” All three films were groundbreaking in their use of special effects and groundbreaking technology.

Landau won an Academy Award for Best Picture for “Titanic” in 1998. He also received nominations for Best Picture for “Avatar” in 2010 and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2023.

In a statement, Cameron said that Landau was “a true friend and collaborator.”

“He was a visionary producer who always pushed the boundaries of what was possible in cinema,” Cameron said.

Landau is survived by his wife, Julie, and two children.

His death is a great loss to the film industry and to the world of cinema.
